The rising significance and worldwide impact of esports have been recognized by the International Olympic Committee. Despite recognizing this trend, the committee has struggled to integrate esports into the Olympic portfolio effectively. Historically, smaller esports tournaments have been included at major Olympic events, which, although fascinating, seemed somewhat overlooked. This apparent lack of proper engagement has likely contributed to the decision to create the Olympic Esports Games (OES).
The IOC has unanimously approved the OES, and the inaugural games are set to take place in Saudi Arabia next year. With this selection, the process of finalizing a host city and venue is ongoing, as well as determining the exact dates. If the event is scheduled for the summer, there might be some overlap with the 2025 Esports World Cup, which will be hosted in Qiddiya, unlike the 2024 festival set in Riyadh.
Regarding the OES, IOC President Thomas Bach remarked that this development signifies a new era for the IOC. He emphasized that with the establishment of the OES, the committee is staying abreast of the digital revolution. The enthusiastic participation of the esports community, represented by the Esports Commission, further validates the attractiveness of the Olympic brand and its values among young people. Bach also highlighted the unique experience and expertise that the Saudi Arabian NOC will bring to this initiative, underscoring that this partnership aligns with the Olympic Charter and values.
